SIBERUT NATIONAL GRAND PARK/ MENTAWAI ISLAND

The Siberut National Grand Park is 195.500 hectares, located on Siberut Island. Siberut is the biggest island in The Mentawai Islands. Siberut Island is surrounded by the Indian Ocean and the line of the equator passes though it, bringing a hot, humid climate.

Variation of Flora
There are at least 6 types of forest vegetation that have been identified the hilly areas on the far side of the island. These include Dipterocarpaceae, mixed pamah seamps, beaches and mangrove forests.

Kind of Fauna
Siberut National Grand Park has a good variety of unique fauna. There are at least 31 species of animals that can be found there and 17 of them are endemic. The kind of Animals are: Tupaia glis Siberut, Macroglosus sobrinus fraternus, petinomys hageni lugens, rattus tiomanicus Mentawai, rattus sabanus siporanus, tattus surifer pagencis, paradoxurus hermaphroditus siberut and hemigalus derbyanus sipora.

AND NOTE.
There are at least 108 kinds of birds on Siberut, one of them is the Otus Mentawai considered as an endemic bird, and other kinds are the pernis apivorus ptylorchynchus, spilornis cheela sipora, macropygia phasianella alassa, psittinus cyanurus pontius, phaenicophaeus siberut, copsychus saularis pagiensis, and orthotomus sepium concinnus.

Activities Offered Nature Tourism
The main attraction in Siberut National Grand Park is the traditional culture of the Siberut society, and the fantastic panorama around the area. The best coral in West Sumatra is found on the East beach of Siberut. Potential areas to find marine life are the corals and islands at Sarabua Bay in the northern part of the island, and along Katepai Beach in Southern of Siberut.

Research
Many topics of interest have been researched on Siberut, including the function and dynamic of the forest ecosystem, kind of medicinal plants, flora and fauna, and the intriguing population.

How to Get There
Siberut can be reached by ship from Padang to Muara Siberut or Muara Sikabaluan, then direct to upper courses of the rivers by canoe and foot the Siberut National Grand Park.
